The swimming events in Rio garnered worldwide attention as Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky led the US team’s dominance of the pool. But who won the App Gold medal for the swimming venue?
The graphic above shows the results from a mobile network in Brazil where Procera monitored the swimming venue each night, and compares the athlete’s gold medal achievements with the apps that were used on mobile networks to celebrate the activity.
The day with the most activity was Friday, August 12, with Joseph Schooling’s historic victory over Michael Phelps in the 100M and Katie Ledecky’s dominant 800M win, with over 8x the normal traffic. Across the week, WhatsApp won 3 nights, and Facebook , the local Brazilian Olympics broadcast site, and Instagram each won two nights. Not quite the US team’s dominance, but taken as a whole, shows the domination that the Facebook properties have in Brazil.
For completeness purposes, the chart below shows the total application usage across all days, and just like in the opening ceremonies, Facebook properties once again take all the spots on the medal podium, with Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram ruling the roost.
