What We Do

Procera Networks develops Evolved DPI solutions that provide the most accurate traffic awareness, control and protection for complex networks.  Its PacketLogic™ product suite was purpose-built for DPI and leverages the company’s advanced identification engine, DRDL™.  DRDL delivers previously unseen accuracy and an unchallenged low false-positive rate even as applications get encrypted.

Why We Do It 

Network operators want to regain control, monetize the investments they have made, and better utilize their network assets. The Internet has gone through rapid change and will continue to change. Just consider all Internet devices like iPhone, Slingbox and Xbox that did not even exist two years ago. Every change poses a threat and an opportunity to network operators. But, without the proper intelligence they are unable to fend off or capitalize either of them.

Most network operators do not know what their users do online. This makes it hard to detect and mitigate threats and poor network performance, and it makes it impossible to personalize services to create user satisfaction and customer loyalty. All these issues till now have been resolved by adding more bandwidth, which temporarily hides the actual problem. However, it ruins the business case and stakeholders are getting eager to see a return on the infrastructure investments they have made.

This calls for a different and more long-term approach. It calls for an Evolved DPI solution tool that in a timely manner provides accurate information that enables proper business decisions. At Procera Networks we know BSPs. We have more than 450 BSPs, ranging from telcos, mobile operators and cable MSOs to universities and large enterprises worldwide that have deployed PacketLogic since the initial launch back in 2001. Most important to making the right decision is to have access to and rely on accurate intelligence. This is where PacketLogic stands out from the competition. 

DRDL™ stands for Datastream Recognition Definition Language and is the state-of-the-art traffic identification and classification engine in PacketLogic. With more than 900 signatures (Jun-08) that facilitate a broad range of criteria, header information, actual payload, bi-directional traffic information and the characteristics of a handshake, DRDL delivers previously unseen accuracy and an unchallenged low false-positive rate – even as applications get encrypted. Besides application identification, DRDL also gives PacketLogic the unique capability of characterizing a flow as streaming, random-looking, interactive, etc., and to aggregate detailed properties like filename, SIP caller ID, chat channel and mime-type.

PacketLogic has from the beginning been purpose-built for DPI in broadband service provider (BSP) networks. This explains the ubiquitous approach to accuracy. It also explains the carrier-grade performance and capacity of PacketLogic. The PL10000 offers 80 Gbps throughput – four times the capacity of the closest competitor – in a fully integrated AdvancedTCA chassis. The latter secures full resilience on all critical components as well as the availability required by Tier-1 carriers. Procera offers the first true Tier-1 DPI solution that enables monetization of the network through intuitive service creation.

Products and Solutions

As fully integrated solutions, PacketLogic products give network managers access to relevant network traffic intelligence that enables network optimization, creation of services (with the most accurate user and location awareness) and protection against malicious behavior.

PacketLogic is a state-of-the-art deep packet inspection (DPI) solution that offers an extensive feature-richness in the software modules LiveView, Filtering, Traffic Shaping, Statistics and WebStatistics. The PacketLogic hardware platforms offer a range of configurations from the entry-level 4 Mbps PL5600 through the PL7720 up to the high-end 80 Gbps PL10000, to serve the most complex to simple networks with the same robust functionality. Completing the product suite is the PL1200 Statistics server, which aggregates traffic data for further analysis.

For the most accurate user and location awareness, PacketLogic Subscriber Manager (PSM) integrates PacketLogic with network systems like AAA, OSS, BSS, provisioning and policy managers. This enables per-user tracking and policies, also known as user awareness, as well as knowledge of where in the network the user connects, i.e. location awareness. User awareness is required to create personalized offerings that attract new customers, minimize churn, and increase ARPU through value-add services. Location awareness makes it possible to resolve, or even avoid,congestion, enhancing the user-experience. It can also control roaming costs through automatic policy enforcement.
